Resistance and Radical Pedagogy in Ixhuatan / Pueblo Viejo, Oaxaca

This event takes place on unceded, never surrendered Coast Salish Territories of the Lekwungen speaking people, as represented today by the Songhees and Esquimalt nations.

The Preparatoria Communitaria José Martí is a radical high school located in the Zapotec community of Ixhuatán, Oaxaca, with a satellite school in the Huave (Ikoojts) community of Pueblo Viejo. For the past 10 years the Prepa has been engaged in a radical and anti-colonial pedagogical project - breaking down the barriers between education and community and building resources and tools to reclaim language and connection to the land.

The evening will begin with a presentation on the history of the school as well as its current goals, projects, and struggles (particularly against Canadian mining corporations). Two short documentaries will be screened, including one made by current students at the Prepa about their school.

Afterwards, we will move into an open mic - a space for songs, poetry, stories! Let's come together to celebrate anti-colonial resistance in a spirit of solidarity across borders. All donations from the fundraiser will go directly to supporting the school -- for helping the costs of operation and maintenance, especially of the washrooms which are in need of repair, as well as towards a larger project of constructing a proper studio for use by the Radio Workshop which runs the community radio station Ixhuateca Radio 92.1.

though this is a fundraiser, no one will be turned away for lack of funds!
